Samia Nkrumah elected chairman of CPP
Audrey Agyiri-Inkoom
September 12, 2011
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) Member of Parliament for
Jomoro in the Western Region, Samia Yaba Nkrumah has been
elected the first female chairman of the CPP at the just
ended congress in Accra.
Neatly dressed in all-white apparel, Samia won a total
victory as she polled 1,151 votes, leaving three other
contestants to share 695 votes among themselves in the
hotly-contested race.
CPP leading personalities described the accomplishment as an
honour to the memory of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as the delegates
elected his daughter to occupy the uppermost position within
the party.
She in the company of her Italian husband received roaring
applause from a fully-packed congress room to the agony of
her opponents after she was called to address the delegates.
According to the new chairperson, “We need a new CPP with
independent minded people,” adding that she had the
leadership qualities and organizational ability to stimulate
support for the 2012 general elections.
