Energy minister: West Africa Gas Pipeline will bring economic benefits to Ghana
Audrey Agyiri-Inkoom, Ghanadot

Accra, April 9, Ghanadot - The Energy Ministry has indicated that the supply of Natural gas from Nigeria to Ghana through the West Africa Gas Pipeline would put the country in a better position to derive maximum economic benefits.

Flows on the pipeline, which was originally put in service in 2008, were suspended partly due to fuel quality problems and vandalism of supply lines in Nigeria by rebels angered over the unequal distribution of oil wealth.

The Director of the Project, Jack Derickson has however announced resumption of the gas supply to Ghana since March 20 saying the volume of gas flowing is approximately 30 million standard cubic feet per day, which is enough to generate 110 megawatts of power.

In an interview on Citi FM, he Energy Minister, Joseph Oteng-Agyei revealed that with the expected production of gas in Ghana sometime in October, the country can better exploit the prospects of these developments in power generation to facilitate the country’s industrialization agenda.

“What we are doing with the West African Gas Pipeline is that if we get the gas in the long run we will build a pipe line to Aboadze and once our gas gets to Aboadze, then it means we can use the water fuller gas pipeline as tolling to get to Tema”.
