Kotoko's win over Hassacas topples Hearts as league leaders
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, July 9, Ghanadot - Kumasi Asante Kotoko has moved to the top of the Glo Premier League after defeating Hassacas 1-0 in Kumasi this afternoon.

Midfielder Jordan Opoku scored in the first half to hand the Reds all three points as the league heads into the penultimate stages this weekend.

After the opener, the defending champions playing minus leading scorer Alex Asamoah – slapped with a club suspension - struggled and were for a greater part of the second half on the back foot as the Sekondi side pushed for the equalizer.

But when referee Joseph Lamptey sounded the whistle for the end of the game which was rescheduled to today after Wednesday’s heavy rains, fans of Kotoko charged into jubilation despite the season still left with two matches to go.

The defeat sends Hassacas back into the bottom three.

There are two games left to end the season and the victory at the Baba Yara Stadium gives the Reds renewed hope in their title assault as rivals, Hearts of Oak, who they now lead by a better goal difference appear not to be doing enough to win the league.

Last season, the title had been decided by this stage of the competition but the scripts are very different as Hearts of Oak have allowed a 14-point gap at the start of the second round to whittle to nothing now.

Both sides would brace up for some big games this weekend as Kotoko travel to Obuasi to face AshantiGold, who are battling with relegation.

Hearts would be on the road to play Berekum Arsenals at the Golden City Park, a venue which surprisingly lost its invincibility status after the Gunners tasted their first home defeat in five years on Wednesday.
That matches will definitely be the decider.
