Vodafone fund for flood victims raises Over
12,000 from Public
Accra, July 13 - The public have so far donated 12,443
Ghana Cedis to the Vodafone Red Alert for flood victims
initiative, three weeks after it was launched in Accra. At
the launch event the Vodafone Group Foundation also promised
£10,000 Pound Sterling to the National Disaster Management
Organisation (NADMO) for the purchase of fibre glass speed
boats to access flooded areas.
Vodafone Ghana launched the Red Alert platform when the
company said it was moved by the plight of the hundreds of
people who were badly affected by the recent floods which
swept away the lives of 35 people and destroyed property
running into thousands of Ghana cedis.
The text-based donation, Red Alert, is expected to run till
the end of July. It is a demonstration of the Vodafone Ghana
Foundation’s commitment to providing disaster relief support
and creating platforms for well-meaning people of the
Ghanaian society to support a good course in critical times.
Miss Afua Sarkodie of the Vodafone Foundation encouraged
Vodafone customers, in an interview, to continue texting to
help assist with the critical needs of victims of the recent
floods, who are yet to put their lives back together after
losing their properties and loved ones to the recent floods.
Customers of Vodafone can donate GHC1 by texting the words
HELP to the short code 133. Customers can text as many times
as they wish. At the launch of Red Alert, over two weeks
ago, Vodafone Ghana, as a company, donated food items
running into several thousands of Ghana cedis.
Mr Ike Cudjoe, Head of Corporate Communications praised the
media for their cooperation in this initiative so far and
urged the public to show more concern and help bring back
some level of comfort to the victims.
