Imposter remanded in police custody

Akyem Swedru (E/R), Nov 17, GNA- An Akyem Swedru Circuit Court on Friday remanded Francis Atsu Helegah, a 33-year-old corn mill operator, into police custody for allegedly posing as the Crime officer of the Akyem Oda Divisional Police Command.

Helegah whose plea was not taken would re-appear on November 23.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo told the court that on October 11 the accused stopped the complainant, who was driving a taxi, and introduced himself as the new crime officer posted to the area.

Helegah asked the complainant to take him to Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi to preserve his dead mother at the mortuary after which they would return to Akyem oda.

Police Chief Inspector Kwadwo said after negotiations Helegah offered to pay the driver 600,000 cedis and in addition fill his fuel tank for him.

When they got to Akyem Aperade in the Birim South District the accused asked the complainant to pick four other people, including a young man whose head had been plastered.

Helegah, after inquiring from the man with the plaster who was responsible for the injury, again introduced himself as a senior police officer at Akyem Oda and promised to have the assailant arrested.

The prosecution said when they got to Akyem Akenkansu the other passengers alighted, Helegah requested them to buy akpeteshie for him.

He said the driver who became suspicious of the accused enquired from another driver if he was aware that the crime officer was on transfer to which he replied in the negative.

The driver then decided not to continue with the journey and requested Helegah to pay him 100,000 cedis so that he would return to Akyem Oda but Helegah refused.

The driver sought the assistance of his colleague and together drove Helegah to the Akyem Aperade police.

The prosecution said at the police station, Helegah insisted that he was the divisional crime officer and threatened to have the police sergeant who would escort him to Akyem Oda dismissed if it proved that he was not an imposter.
