Pressure mounts on Gushiegu political violence suspects

Gushiegu, (N/R), Sept. 8, Ghanadot/GNA - The Northern Regional Police Commander, has appealed to the public especially residents of Gushiegu to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of suspects in last week’s violence between supporters of the two major political parties.

Mr Ofosu-Mensah Gyeabour, the new Northern Regional Police Commander, said although the police had intelligence information on the hide-outs of some of the suspects, it would require the assistance of the people in the area.

Mr Gyeabour, who until recently was the Upper East Regional Police Commander, made the appeal on Sunday when he addressed a contingent of police and other security services personnel posted to the Gushiegu District to help restore law and order in the area.

The violence caused by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led to the death of six persons.

Mr Gyeabour asked the security personnel to exhibit a high sense of professionalism in the discharge of their duties and avoid meddling in politics and chieftaincy affairs in the area.

of the people and thus allowed the people to readily provide them with information that would lead to the arrest of the suspects.

The Regional Police Commander asked law-abiding citizens in the district to go about their normal duties without fear since the security agents were around to protect them.

Mr Mahama Abukari, the District Chief Executive, said the violence, which erupted was least expected saying it was unfortunate since the district was noted to be peaceful.

He urged the security personnel to ensure that all those arrested as well as those yet to be apprehended were prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to those who would want to foment trouble in future.

The DCE assured them of the assembly’s readiness to assist them to discharge their duties effectively and efficiently.
