Ashanti Region NDC kicks against region's minister designate
Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Jan 28, Ghanadot - Even though Parliament is yet to vet Mr. Kofi Opoku Manu, the President nominee for the Ashanti Regional Minister, a group within the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) in the Ashanti Region that calls itself the Concerned Members of the NDC has kicked against the nomination.

In a petition signed by the spokesperson of the group, Mr. Frank Adjei Boateng and which was copied to the office of the President, the group alleged that, the President nominee for the Asanti Region, Mr. Kofi Manu was not known in the region as a staunch member of the NDC and that limits his understanding of the political dynamics in the one of the most populous region in the country.

The group said, in as much as they do not under estimate the due diligence that the President followed in arriving at his choice for the region, the appointment does not stand to benefit the party in the region.

"Mr. Manu like many other individuals is more than qualified to be the Regional Minister in view of the fact that he hails from the Ashanti Region and also has the professional competence to be able to run the region but he has no political base since he was not known in the region as a core member of the party and its dedicated supporters who have shown faith even when the party was in opposition for eight years", the group stated in the petition to the President.

The group lamented that, the Ashanti chapter of the NDC had suffered much during the eight year period in political opposition under painful circumstances and that only true party faithful could come to their rescue.

"Since the Ashanti Region is the strong hold of the NPP, we believe that a person with true party credentials should be appointed to reorganize the party to attract more votes in the 2012 elections when you seek second term", they told the President.

The group in the petition told the President that there are equally competent, loyal and dedicated hard core supporters who easily fit into the bill to be regional ministers. They have therefore call on the President, Prof Mills to critically consider the issues raised and take a second look at the appointment of Mr. Kofi Manu as the Ashanti Regional Minister.
