Curfews in Bawku, Gushegu renewed

Accra, June 30, Ghanadot - The Minister of the Interior, Mr. Cletus Avoka has by executive instrument renewed the curfews imposed in the Bawku Municipality and Gushegu Township and their immediate environs for another one week with effect from Monday, this week. The renewal was on the advice of the Upper East and Northern Regional Security Councils. according to a statement signed by the Minister of the Interior, Mr Cletus Avoka.


According to a statement signed the Minister in Accra, it said the curfew hours for the Bawku Municipality and the immediate environs remained unchanged and would be from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am the following day.


Similarly, the curfew for the Gushegu township also remained unchanged from 12:00 midnight to 4:00 am each day, the statement said. "Government has been very much encouraged by the relative peace and calm in the Bawku Municipality and its environs in the last few weeks and continues to urge the leadership of the factions and the good people of the areas to assist in the search of lasting peace."


The government expressed its appreciation to the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders and all peace-loving people of the areas for sustaining the peace.


At the same time, the government has reiterated that there is a ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipal area, Zabzugu, Binduri, Pusiga, Zoasi and Gushegu townwships and their environs from carrying arms, ammunitions or any offensive weapon, and any person found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.

However, in an telephone interview with the Executive Director of the African PeaceBuilding Club, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Mr. Salami Rahami, who is an indigene of the Bawku Municipality condemned the government using persistant curfews as a way of solving the conflicts in Ghana, adding "the people of Bawku and Gushegu are tired of dragonian curfews"

According to him, government use modern methods of solving conflicts, so as to bring both the Bawku and Gushegu issues under control.
