Kufuor called to join Club de Madrid
Audrey Agyiri-Inkoom, Ghanadot

Accra, Nov 13, Ghanadot - Ghana’s former President, John Agyekum Kufuor has officially been called into the Club de Madrid.

He was called together with Nigeria’s Olusegun Obasanjo, Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana and Ferenc Mádl, former President of Hungary. The announcement was made on Friday in Madrid, Spain.

The Club of Madrid is an independent organization dedicated to strengthening democratic values and leadership around the world by drawing on the unique experience and resources of its Members –more than 74 democratic former Heads of State and Government from more than 50 countries who contribute their time, experience and knowledge to this mission.

Some members of the Club were in Ghana recently to hold roundtable discussion on how they can be helpful to their individual countries. They were lauded by Ghana’s sitting President, John Mills for continuing to have the interest of countries at heart after serving various terms of office as Presidents.

The Club of Madrid, the world’s largest forum of former democratic Presidents and Prime Ministers also announced on Friday that Wim Kok, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands (1994-2002) has been appointed to preside over the organization, effective immediately.

Prime Minister Kok, who will hold office for the 2010-2013 term, becomes the third President of the Club of Madrid and replaces Ricardo Lagos, former President of Chile (2000-2006).

Ricardo Lagos has been invited to remain on the Board for a year in recognition of the support he can provide to incoming officers and the organization as a whole.

The new additions bring the total membership of Club of Madrid to 74 democratic former Heads of State from more than 50 countries.
