I will bring freshness to the Finance Ministry-Fiifi Kwetey

Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 10, Ghanadot - Fiifi Kwetey, one of two deputies to the Ministry Finance and Economic Planning, yesterday stormed the premises of the Appointments Committee of Parliament to answer to arduous questions put to him by the members of the committee.

As the propaganda secretary of the then opposition NDC, Fiifi Kwetey under the platform of a committee to set the record straight and various newspaper publications made numerous allegations against the then Kufuor government, some of which were pejorative.

Yesterday was a pay back time especially for the minority side of the committee as they attacked him with questions of his nationality, educational and professional background, and his controversial political sentiments.

But the deputy minister designate showed the minority that he had totally prepared himself for the task as he showed little signs of been under pressure.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juabeng North, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, had difficulty why Fiifi Kwetey used eight years to obtain his Ordinary Level (O Level) Certificate, having done four years each in Togo and Ghana.

The MP for New Juaben North argued that Fiifi could easily have attained his O' Level certificate without using the eight years, insisting other people have attained the certificate in five years in similar situation.

However Fiifi Kwetey explicated that he had no choice but to begin his O' Level in Form Two after numerous attempts to continue from Form Four failed.

He revealed that, the headmaster of Bishop Herman at the time insisted he started from Form Two because of his paucity in the English language.

The deputy minister designate for Finance and Economic Planning Ministry said he hoped to confront the problems in the country’s economy and to bring freshness in the area of finance and economic planning.

He conceded his nomination and subsequent confirmation will serve as a learning curve for him.

According to him, he was not astonished by attempts to question his proficiency and competence in the area of Finance and Economics, disclosing that those critics were not aware of his background.

The deputy minister of Finance gave the assurance and pledged to work diligently to maximise and prioritise revenue to the benefit of the country.

Addressing the question of corruption posed by ranking member E.T. Mensah, Fiifi Kwetey bemoaned tax evasion by importers and pledged to block all loopholes to that effect.

The deputy minister designate called on all, regardless of party affiliation to join in dealing with the issue of micro-financing, adding that peoples ability to pay back their loans should be the only basis under which monies should be given out.
