Ghana as credit worthy because of NPP-Kufuor

Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, July 10, Ghanadot - Former president John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that Ghana is still regarded by development partners across the world as credit worthy because of the practical decision his government undertook.

Speaking on Oman FM yesterday morning, Mr. Kufuor condemned people who are accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of being corrupt. According to him the debt that his government was accused of leaving behind was rather used to develop the nation.

Though President Mills weeks after he was sworn into office accused the NPP government for piling up debts for his administration, Mr. Kufuor maintained that funds secured by the country during his reign were invested in the right direction.

According to him, during his leadership, the country’s economy grew by some 7.3 percent in 2008 whilst GDP quadrupled over the eight-year rule.

He defended his government's decision to take up the Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) Initiative, adding that joining the programme was a sensible decision as the country needed funds to fix the ailing economy at that time.

The former president revealed that his desire while in office was to help improve the quality of life for the people, with the provision of potable water, improve education, and restore the dignity of the Ghanaian.

Mr. Kufuor dared critics to visit University of Ghana to assess the level of infrastructure that his government undertook, which to him is the most exceptional since the independence of Ghana.

He urged the NPP to unite and forge ahead to win the presidency in the next election, and maintained that for the NPP to win back power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), being united is the best strategy.
