" According to the contractor, for time immemorial, the way to dispose of garbage — say, a banana peel — was to toss it on the ground where it became food for the donkeys or the goats. It was a self-sustaining cycle that made sense in the age before plastic. But in the hydro-carbon age, which gave rise to the petro-chemical industry, those customs have become a burden and have contributed to a situation in which the ground in many areas is covered to some depth in plastic wrappers. "It was beyond belief," he said. "Everywhere you looked there was plastic lying around, even in some wells. I'm never going to look at a plastic bag the same way again."
