Land acquisition difficulties
contribute to youth unemployment
New Edubiase (Ash), Dec.21, Ghanadot/GNA- Mr. Francis Kudjo
Dorpenyor, the Adansi South District Chief Executive, has
attributed the high unemployment rate in the district to the
difficulty of the youth to acquire land for farming.
He has therefore appealed to chiefs and landowners in the
area to release land to the youth under favourable and
flexible terms.
Mr. Dorpenyor was speaking at the District Farmers' Day held
at Kwame Adu where more than 20 farmers were given awards
that included bicycles, spraying machines, ghetto blasters,
roofing sheets and machetes.
Ghana, he said, was basically an agro-based country and that
it's rapid development depended on the active involvement of
the youth.
Mr. Dorpenyor said more than 100 youth in the district had
been settled and trained in basic agricultural technologies
and methods under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).
He said each youth was being encouraged and provide with
inputs to cultivate a hectare each of maize or rice.
Mr. Dorpenyor said he was optimistic that the exercise would
not only offer sustainable employment to the youth but also
increase agricultural production in the country.
Mr. Jeoffery Kporfeame, the District Director of
Agriculture, urged the farmers to collaborate effectively
with the Agricultural Extension Officers to improve and
increase their yield.
He said some agricultural research institutions have
produced high-yielding seeds and advised the farmers,
especially the youth, to patronize them.
