Keep unity of NPP foremost - Legon TESCON

Accra, Dec. 19, Ghanadot/GNA - The University of Ghana, Legon, branch of TESCON has cautioned aspirants vying to be the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), their supporters and members of the party not to compromise the unity of the party for anything.

In a statement signed by Mr Alexander Frimpong, President and Mr Isaac Sarpong, Secretary, the executive and members wished the aspirants, delegates and members of the NPP well in the National Congress of the party to elect a flag bearer for the 2008 general election.

It said members of the Legon branch of TESCON were concerned about the congress because it had a direct bearing on the electoral fortunes of the party.
The Legon TESCON stated that whatever went into the campaign, the accusations and counter accusations should be put behind to enable members to attend the congress with the unity of purpose.

It said the bitter lessons of 1979, which led to the disunity of the party and the subsequent loss in the general elections should serve as a caution to all members of the NPP.

The statement stated that members of the branch as the intellectual youth wing of the party had observed that each of the aspirants could lead the NPP to win the 2008 elections, however, the Legon TESCON noted that this would only be possible when all the aspirants rallied behind the one who would emerge as the winner after the congress.

It said that the youth expected the rank and file of the NPP to protect and defend the unity and peace that had been the hallmark of the party over the years.

The Legon TESCON expressed its confidence in the national executive of the party for the measures it had put in place to conduct a free, fair and transparent congress, which would make the outcome acceptable to all.

The statement also expressed the confidence of the Legon TESCON that all the aspirants would advice their followers to conduct themselves in a civil manner not to mar the beauty of the whole exercise.

It stated the readiness of members of the Legon TESCON to support the party and whoever emerged as the winner at the congress since victory in the 2008 general elections was dear to their hearts.
