re-elects Okine as General Secretary
Kumasi, Dec. 14, Ghanadot/GNA – The Public Services Workers
Union (PSWU) of the Ghana Trade Union Congress (GTUC) has
re-elected Mr Abraham Tetteh Okine as the General Secretary
of the union for another four years term at the end of its
three-day 7th quadrennial delegate’s conference in Kumasi on
Thursday.
He polled 113 votes to defeat his challenger Mr Victor
Amponsah who had 21 votes, while two other contestants
Joseph Debrah Gyamfi and Henry Gharbin withdrew in support
of Mr Okine.
Six other members of the Union were elected to other
executive positions with Miss Georgina Opoku Amankwaa, a
legal practitioner as the national chair person and Mr Jacob
Owuo as Vice Chair person with Mr Richard Ampabeng as the
Deputy General Secretary.
The rest are Mr Santos Beyogleh as first trustee with Ms
Fati Seidu Tambro as second trustee while the position of
National chair person for women went to Miss Cecilia Bawaana
Naab.
The election was conducted by the Ashanti Regional Electoral
Officer of the Electoral Commission Mr Kofi Asumani.
Swearing in the elected officers, the Chairman of the Ghana
Trade Union Congress(GTUC), Mr Alex Bonney commended the
delegates for the successful delegates conference and
advised the elected executives to forget the past and unite
to enhance the development of the union as a pace setter
among the 17 trade unions in the country.
He advised them to be dedicated and co-operate with those
who lost the elections and take concrete decisions for the
development and welfare of members of the union.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Okine, who had been the General
Secretary for the union for the past 22 years thanked the
delegates for the confidence reposed in him and other
executive members and gave assurance that they would
mobilize the needed resources to complete all projects of
the union, especially the public services centre in Kumasi.
