MPs, DCEs urged to explain government
policies to communities
Widana (UE), Dec. 12, Ghanadot/GNA- Members of Parliament
(MP), District Chief Executives (DCE's) and Assembly members
have been urged to explain Government policies to the
members of their communities.
Mr Bibariwiah Mike Fuoh, Upper East Deputy Director of the
National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), made the
call during a durbar attended by chiefs, assembly and unit
committee members and other public officials at Widana in
the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region on Monday.
The durbar, sponsored by Action Aid International Ghana (AAIG}
was aimed at increasing citizens civic knowledge and skills
that would enable them to demand quality and relevant
service delivery from public officials.
He said there was the need for those in authority to visit
their communities to know their problems in order to find
the appropriate solutions and to also explain government
policies to them.
Mr Fuoh noted that such a move by the authorities would also
give members the opportunity to also participate in the
decision making process of the country.
"Everybody has the right to participate in the decision
making process of the country as stipulated in the
constitution", he indicated.
He said the communities also have a responsibility to play
as citizens of Ghana and urged them to support politicians
to help bring development projects to their areas by
honouring their tax obligation.
Mr Fuor said the only way development could be accelerated
in their communities was through the payment of taxes.
He said the NCCE would soon constitute a nine-member
committee, made up of members of the community to identify
three priority areas to be forwarded to the Assembly for
consideration and implementation.
