Thousands
march under CJA umbrella against high cost of living
Accra, Dec. 11, Ghanadot/GNA - Thousands of people are
marching in Accra to heed a call by the opposition pressure
group, the Committee for Joint Action (CJA), to protest
against high cost of living.
The demonstrators, who are clad in red with red headgears
and arm bands, were singing and dancing as the marched from
the Kwame Nkrumah Circle through Farisco to the Hearts Park
for a rally.
The protestors are carrying placards some of which read: "NPP,
Bye, Bye" "Don't impose Chiefs on Us"; "Arise Ghana," and "Yewuo".
They are citing rising utility tariffs and fuel prices and
general difficulties as reasons for their demonstration.
Mr Kwsi Pratt Jnr, one of the leading members of the CJA,
said they expect thousands of people to join the
demonstration.
Scores of policemen are with the marchers and directing
traffic at intersections to ensure that the demonstration
passes off peacefully and also causes minimum disruption of
normal work.
The Ghana Police Service has warned that they would not
tolerate any act of violence by any person to create tension
before, during and after the demonstration.
Deputy Commander of Police, Mr K. A. Opare-Addo, said the
Regional Police Command had information that some
individuals intended to carry arms to defend themselves
during the CJA march.
He said the police would supply "protective facilities" for
the demonstration, tagged "peaceful" by the CJA and advised
demonstrators to obey the rules of the game and not create
any situation to destroy the demonstration.
