Tema Mantse warns against illegal
electrical connections
Tema, Nov 29, Ghandot/GNA - Nii Adjei Kraku 11, Tema Mantse,
has appealed to traders in markets to desist from illegal
electrical connections because it contributes to fire out
breaks.
Nii Kraku said the number of fire outbreaks in some markets
nationwide should be the concern of all especially the
market women who operate with naked fire and urged them to
exercise care in their activities.
Nii Kraku said this when he toured six markets in Ashaiman
and Tema. The tour took him to Ashaiman, Tema Manhean, and
Tema communities Nine, Eight, seven and One markets.
Nii Kraku advised against putting up of shops on water
hydrants and access paths to the markets as that hindered
fire fighting.
Common complaints by the women were lack of stalls, sheds,
urinals, places of convenience, refuse containers and
failure to collect the refuse by the TMA thus compelling
them to litter indiscriminately.
Madam Leticia Korkor Agogo, and Maame Akua Ackong, market
queens for Ashaiman and Community Nine markets respectively,
called for places of convenience for their markets saying
the lack of these facilities contributed to unsanitary
conditions in the markets.
Madam Agogo said a urinal built by the zonal council for the
Ashaiman market had been converted into a bathhouse.
She also appealed to the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) to
rehabilitate the market as it flooded whenever it rained.
Maame Ackong called for the construction of sheds at the
Community Nine market and that traders had to choose between
selling under the scorching the sun and renting an umbrella
for 40 Ghana pesewas a day.
Madam Adjoa Nyantekyewaa, President of the Community One
Market Association, complained of the use of part of the
market as a refuse dump and appealed to TMA to provide
containers because dumping of refuse on the ground was a
health threat.
She also appealed to the TMA to always involve the various
market queens in coming out with policies affecting market
women especially with the payment of tax.
At Community Seven, the main market has only one shed and it
is being used by squatters and the stalls have been turned
into drinking spots.
