NGO calls for comprehensive
data system for land registration
Accra, Nov. 28, GNA - The Citizens Network for Democracy and
Economic Development (CNDED) on Wednesday called on
government to initiate a comprehensive policy to strength
land administration in the country.
" The only way to deal with land issues is to be able to
give land to individuals through a well-defined
technological means," Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, Executive
Director and Human Resource Studies Fellow of Imani Ghana
said at a press conference on Wednesday.
He recalled that poor land regulations begun when the
colonial "masters" took charge of the lands during the
colonial era and enacted rules and regulations in a bid to
export the raw materials to develop their country.
According to Mr. Franklin Cudjoe some of the rules and
regulations survived the period of Independence and were
being enforced.
He said Ghana is under performing in the sector and advised
government and all the stakeholders to address problems with
land administration.
Mr. Kwadwo Afari, Chief Executive Officer of CNDED said,
"poverty has stalked our land like a plaque destroying many
people".
He held that the concept of eradicating poverty in Ghana
through government programmes especially, the
re-distribution of wealth and social welfare programmes
had failed because the policies being used in curbing
poverty rather created problems.
"The time has come for our legislators and policy makers to
recognize that property right is a key building block of any
prosperous society and should be part of our development
programme and effort to fight poverty in Ghana", he
stressed.
