President Kufuor urges chiefs
to guard institution with care and respect
Accra, Nov. 28, Ghanadot/GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor
on Wednesday advised traditional rulers to guard the
chieftaincy institution with total care and respect.
The dignity of the land, he said, was vested in them and
they should do everything to preserve it.
President Kufuor was speaking during a courtesy call on him
at the Castle, Osu, by a delegation of Chiefs from the
Brong-Ahafo Region led by Nana Kwame Korang, Omanhene of
Awua-Domase and Vice President of the Regional House of
Chiefs.
They were there to convey the appreciation of the people in
the region to the Government for giving them their fair
share of development and to wish the President well
following his recent escape in a car crash.
President Kufuor asked the Judicial Committees of the
various Houses of Chiefs to ensure firmness and transparency
in their handling of disputes over stools and skins brought
before them.
He said they should resist all forms of influence by those
who had no legitimate title to vacant stools and skins to
help stop the incidence of violent chieftaincy clashes.
He noted that a beautiful blending of the traditional system
with modern constitutional democracy should promote
stability.
Nana Korang said the people in Brong-Ahafo were grateful for
the development projects they had benefited from in the last
seven years.
He mentioned among them schools, roads, the Sunyani Jubilee
Park and the Bui hydroelectric dam project.
