Baptismal card saves man from imprisonment

Hohoe, Nov 27, Ghanadot/GNA - A Hohoe Circuit court presided over by Mr Samuel Sarpong-Appiah on Tuesday acquitted and discharged a 19 year-old basket weaver for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old junior high school student.

Medenu Attah's acquittal stemmed from the disclosure from the baptismal card of the victim produced at the court that she was 16-and-half years at the time of the incident.

Attah pleaded not guilty to a charge of defilement.

Police Inspector Emmanuel Kpodo told the court that Attah had sex with the victim one evening in September after proposing love to her.

He said the victim became the girlfriend to the suspect from then on and had sex with her several times.

Mr Kpodo said on September 30, Attah detained the victim for 13 days culminating in the beating of gong-gong by the victim's father.

He said Attah was spotted on October 12 at Kpando-Agbenoxoe and escorted to the chief's palace where he confessed "camping" the victim.

A report was then made to the police and he was arrested.
