NGO Trains 160 Volunteers for outreach
programmes on Malaria
Kumasi, Nov.24, Ghanadot/GNA - El-Mamun Centre, a
Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has in the past two
years trained 160 Volunteers to undertake outreach
programmes on malaria prevention and control in the Kumasi
Metropolis.
Mr. Muhammad Mamun Jafar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of
the NGO, who disclosed this , said the volunteers were drawn
from eight malaria- endemic communities in Kumasi including,
Oforikrom, Accra-Town, Anloga, Sobolo, Asafo, Yelwa,
Ayiya-Zongo and Anwiam.
He was speaking at the closing session of a two-day training
workshop on malaria prevention and control organized by the
NGO for some 60 Community-Based Health Volunteers (CBHVs) in
Kumasi on Saturday.
The workshop was sponsored by the National Malaria Control
Programme and aimed at equipping the participants with the
requisite information on malaria prevention methods in order
to build their capacity to enhance their activities.
They would embark on a house-to- house malaria education
campaign in some endemic communities in Kumasi with the view
to reducing the high rate of malaria cases in the
Metropolis.
Mr. Jafar said it was sad that the World Health Organization
(WHO) has estimated that malaria kills one child every 30
seconds and that up to 500 million people suffer from severe
malaria, with most cases occurring in sub-Saharan African.
He indicated that statistics also show that one in every
five childhood deaths resulted from malaria.
This scenario, according to the CEO, should be a major
concern to all well-meaning Ghanaians since the development
had the potential of eroding the socio-economic gains made
by the nation unless proactive measures were instituted to
eradicate the disease.
Mr. Jafar also stressed the need for anti-malaria
campaigners to intensify the education of pregnant women to
enable them adopt safe practices in curbing maternal deaths,
resulting from malaria.
