German Ambassador calls on MESS Minister

Accra, Nov 23. Ghanadot/GNA – Dr Marius Haas, German Ambassador to Ghana has said his country is ready to make available to Ghanaians numerous educational opportunities as part of their efforts to enhance academic relationship between the two countries.

This, he said, will help improve the level of education in the country to promote socio-economic growth.

Dr Haas said this when he paid a courtesy call on Professor Dominic Fobih on Friday in Accra.

Dr. Haas said there were a lot of opportunities in the areas of science, technology and vocational skills training of which Ghanaian students could derive enormous benefits from, hence the decision to establish the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD) to offer such services to Ghanaians.

He said his government is keen on developing and strengthening academic and scientific relationship with Ghana and called on the ministry to liaise with DAAD to facilitate the process.

Dr Haas expressed the hope that the programme would also enhance Ghana-Germany relationship, which has been in existence for the past 50 years.

Prof. Fobih said the ministry acknowledges the contributions of science, technical and vocational education in national development and had laid much emphasis on these areas in the new educational reforms.

He said the nation would require a lot of technical assistance and directions from Germany, which has excelled in the areas of science, technical and vocational education.

Prof. Fobih therefore, called on the German government to provide Ghana with grants to build more technical and vocational institutions, adding; “Ghana’s education has been academic base for too long and it is time to shift to other areas.”

He said the grants will also help the nation to advance teacher training institutions which have now been upgraded to tertiary level and must be given improvements in academic programme development and staff training to meet the requirements of a tertiary institution.
