Churches told to free "Election Sunday" for polls

Kumasi, Sept 25, GNA – An assembly member has suggested to church leaders to reschedule Sunday church services to Saturday to allow their members to cast their ballots on December 7.

This would enable Christians to exercise their franchise because this year’s election is crucial to Ghanaians as it marks the transition from one elected government to another.

Mr Charles Oduro Acheampong, assembly member for Kaasi in the Kumasi metropolis, made the suggestion in an interview with Ghana News Agency in Kumasi.

Citing long queues during the recent voters’ re-registration exercise, Mr Acheampong said it was clear that Christians should not undertake serious church activities to coincide with the elections.

He said it was wrong for some opinion leaders in the Christian community to assume that holding church services on any other day apart from Sundays was wrong and unethical and that the Bible does not mandate any particular day for worshipping.

Mr Acheampong said Christians were not immune from politics since every government policy affects them and as such they should be actively involved in the nation’s decision-making process.
