STMA/MTTU to arrest and prosecute drivers

Sekondi, July 24, Ghanadot/GNA - The Sekondi–Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) and the Motor Traffic Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service would from Monday July 28, begin an exercise to arrest and prosecute drivers who load and park at unauthorised places in the metropolis.

The move is in response to a threat by drivers who operate from designated lorry parks to also join their colleagues or embark on a strike in protest.

This was contained in a release signed by Mr. John Laste, Public Relations Officer of the Assembly.

It said the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Old Accra Station, Effikauma Lower Prah bank area, Kojokrom and the Effiakuma number nine, were areas targeted for the operation.

According to the release, the exercise was meant to ensure that all drivers who operated in the metropolis did so in conformity with the Assemblies’ bye-laws on parking, loading of passengers and off-loading of goods.

The unnecessary traffic would be greatly minimised when the operation took off, the release added.

The release stated that the various stakeholders would be involved in the exercise to ensure road safety for both passengers and road users.
