GES Deputy Director-General calls for
cooperation between SRCs and administration
Likpe-Mate (VR), July 24, Ghanadot/GNA - Mrs Benedicta Naana
Biney, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education
Service (GES), at the weekend called for good relationship
between Students' Representative Councils (SRCs) and school
authorities.
She said the absence of rapport between them increased
suspicion leading to breach of the peace and destruction of
school property.
Mrs Biney said this at the 39th Speech and Prize Giving Day
of the Likpe Secondary School at Likpe-Mate in the Hohoe
District.
Eighty students who distinguished themselves academically
received book prizes with Mr E.K. Gbafah, immediate past
Headmaster and Mr Noah Adzanugblah, who served the school
for 11 and 39 years respectively, honoured for their
meritorious services.
Mrs Biney urged SRCs to use approved communication channels
to forward grievances and appealed to school authorities to
maintain open-communication links and mainstream grievances
of students.
She said education continued to play a crucial role in the
development chain and that government was poised to
restructure the education sector, hence the implementations
of the new reforms in September.
Mr John Peter Amewu, Hohoe District Chief Executive, said
the district, which was once the citadel of education, was
succumbing to low standards and called for a collective
crusade to reverse the trend.
Mr Cyprian K. Otti, Headmaster of the school, said academic
performance improved with the 2005/2006-year group recording
a 93 percent. Many of them got admission into tertiary
institutions.
He said student enrolment rose to 425 from 38 in 1968, with
staff population rising to 50 including 23 tutors from a
humble beginning of four teachers.
Mr Otti said despite the collective efforts of the Parent/
Teacher Association (PTA), old students, chiefs and the
district assembly to improve and upgrade school
infrastructure, the school lacked staff accommodation,
dormitory blocks, assembly hall, means of transport and
access roads.
Nana Soglo Alloti IV, Paramount Chief of Likpe, appealed to
stakeholders, especially government, to develop the school
and raise it to a higher status.
Master Ebenezer Sackitey, School Prefect, said the school
performed creditably in the inter-district cultural and
sports festivals, winning many trophies and attributed it to
discipline.
