Ashanti Regional Police Command
gears up to combat car snatchers
Kumasi, July 23, Ghanadot/GNA - Having identified car
snatching as a major armed robbery activity in the Ashanti
Region, the Regional Police Command will step up snap road
checks to stem the menace as the December polls approaches.
Mr. Kwaku Ayensu Opare-Addo, Deputy Commissioner of Police
and Regional Police Commander who announced this in Kumasi
on Wednesday, also said the police would enforce laws
banning articulated trucks to move after 1400 hours to
reduce road accidents.
The Regional Commander was addressing media personnel at a
meeting to formally introduce himself as the new Ashanti
Regional Police chief.
He reiterated that the police would impound vehicles with DV
and DP number plates who ply the roads after 1900 hours
since such cars have been noted to be the ones used by
criminals to carry out their nefarious acts.
Mr. Opare-Addo called on the public to be more security
conscious by not receiving calls at obscured places at night
to avoid being robbed of their phones.
He called for media/public cooperation in its efforts at
security expediency to create a peaceful atmosphere for all
residents and appealed to the public to volunteer
information to the police on criminals for rewards.
Mr Opare-Addo expressed satisfaction that residential and
other robberies were going down and said car snatching was
on the ascendancy.
Mr Opare-Addo advised media personnel to be circumspect in
their reportage and not only attack the police but give
praise where praise is due.
