Management of Dorman Long Engineering invited to inspect Adomi Bridge

Atimpoku(ER), July 17, Ghanadot/GNA – Management of Dorman Long Bridge and Engineering Limited, who constructed the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku has been invited to inspect and offer technical advice on the 50-year-old bridge.

Mr Peter Dagadu, Director of Bridges, Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) announced this when briefing newsmen at Atimpoku on Wednesday on efforts to repair cracks detected on some of the steel beams under the bridge.

He said the cracks in some of the beams were being welded and the inspection would be conducted on other beams to repair any cracks detected.

Mr Dagadu said GHA had been conducting periodic inspection and maintenance on the bridge built to last for 120 years.

He said three major inspections had been conducted on the bridge in 1988-89,1999 and 2000 and during the last inspection a crack was detected in one of the beams which was welded.

Mr Dagadu explained that the current problem was the result of heavy-duty vehicles like articulated trucks using the bridge designed for vehicles that weighed a maximum of 20 tonnes when loaded.

He said a temporary weigh-bridge would be located at the Akwamufie end of the bridge to check the weight of vehicles, which intend using the bridge pending the siting of a permanent weigh-bridge later.

Mr Dagadu appealed to drivers to bear with the situation and co-operate with the technicians working to repair the cracks.

He commended fishermen in the area for their public spiritedness, which led to the detection of the current problem on the bridge.

Mr Emmanuel Akyea, a staff of Juapong branch of Agriculture Development Bank present during the briefing, appealed to management of GHA to relocate the toll collection booth at the Atimpoku end of the bridge to the Akwamufie end to relieve the bridge of the heavy weight exerted on it by articulated trucks when the drivers halt to buy their tickets.
