US supports local tomato farmers to
produce improved variety
Tanoso (B/A), July 14, Ghanadot/GNA – The United States of
America International Development and Trade and Investment
Programme for Competitive Export Economy, is supporting
tomato farmers at Tanoso in Techiman Municipality to produce
improved varieties.
The support that comes in the form of inputs supply such as
seedlings, fertilizers, and fungicide, is also aimed at
boosting tomato production to feed the Techiman and Wenchi
tomato factories.
Mr Charles Ampofo, Administrative Manager of the Abrono
Organic Farming Project, who told the Ghana News Agency on
Monday, said more than 300 farmers from Tanoso, Tree Tomato
and Kunak, a farmer based organisations, were engaged in
drip-irrigation projects in the area.
He said the project, which began December last year was at
its second phase.
The National Secretariat of the Ministry of Food and
Agriculture, he said, had provided new varieties of tomato
seedlings.
Mr Ampofo asked beneficiary farmer groups not to abuse the
modalities given them and also to use the improved
varieties, which had a longer lifespan.
