Environmentalist decries building on
mountains
Accra, July 14, Ghanadot/GNA- Mr Yao Tomfeah, an
environmentalist, on Monday decried the building of houses
and other structures on mountainous areas in Ghana, saying
the practice has a long -term and irreversible environmental
effects.
He said cutting down of trees and the wanton destruction of
other vegetation cover for construction projects and farming
is very alarming.
Mr Tomfeah, who is the Chairman of the German-based Afrika
Wiederaufforstungsverien e.v., a non-governmental
organisation made this known to the Ghana News Agency, in
Accra.
He stressed: “Trees are donors of rain and serves as natural
fertiliser and so cutting them down indiscriminately is very
worrying.”
Mr Tomfeah called on the Ministry of Lands, Forestry and
Mines, Department of Geological Survey, Environmental
Protection Agency and other stakeholders to be proactive to
save the environment for posterity.
