Nurses urged to accept postings to rural areas

Kumasi, July 4, Ghanadot/GNA - Major Courage Quashigah (Rtd), Minister of Health, has admonished students of Training Colleges to accept postings to the rural areas during their training and after training.

He said this would help ensure that majority of the Ghanaian population who are resident in the rural areas have access to nursing care for quality health care delivery.
Major Quashigah made the call in a speech read on his behalf at the inauguration of the Kwadaso SDA Nursing Training College (NTC) in Kumasi on Friday.

He indicated that the nursing profession was one that went with a lot of responsibilities and that it behoved on nurses to be committed to duty, disciplined and be ready to work in every environment no matter the challenges.

The Minister affirmed government’s commitment to provide a conducive environment in rural areas to make health professionals comfortable during training and after training.

He charged the private sector to collaborate effectively with government to address challenges facing the health sector such as limited resources, lack of skilled manpower and the huge disparities between regions and districts in terms of geographical and financial access to health services.

Major Quashigah entreated the private sector, especially religious bodies to devote a chunk of their resources and funds to development projects in all sectors of the economy, more importantly building enough nurses training facilities to help produce the needed human resource for the sector.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, in a brief message delivered on his behalf, commended the SDA Church for providing health facilities, educational institutions and water and sanitation services.

He charged students of the Kwadaso SDA NTC to be serious with their studies and shun examination malpractices that could ruin their career development.

Mr. Daniel Atta-Tuffuor, Principal of the College, said the school had a total population of 240 currently, up from 42 in 2005, and that his outfit was committed to churning out God-fearing and dedicated nurses for quality health care delivery.
