Ex-serviceman praises President

Sunyani, July 2, Ghanadot/GNA – Mr. Steven Owusu, an ex-serviceman and resident at Duayaw Nkwanta in Brong-Ahafo Region, on Wednesday commended President John Agyekum Kufuor for the able manner he has steered the affairs of the country since the New Patriotic Party came to power.

He was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at a well attended party organised by the Regional Coordinating Council at the residency in Sunyani to honour senior citizens on Republic Day.

Mr. Owusu said he spent 10 years in the United States on a course while in active service and had been overwhelmed by the drastic transformation and extent of the country’s development especially in the area of infrastructure on his return.

He stated that “unlike the Rawlings regime where people were under slavery, the NPP government has promoted freedom of expression by the repeal of the criminal libel law and has been sensitive to the plight and welfare of the people as demonstrated by President Kufuor’s announcement of the recent economic relief package”.

The ex-serviceman said with the discovery of oil in large commercial quantities, the nation was going to stop if not reduce the use of hard currency to import crude oil, which would bring great relief to the country’s economy.

Mr. Owusu appealed to Ghanaians to compare the performance of the NPP and the NDC governments and vote for the NPP so President Kufuor’s successor could continue to build on the good foundation laid.

He appealed to the police and other security agencies to keep up the good work in apprehending armed robbers and hard drug peddlers and users.

Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, said it was important to commemorate the Republic Day in honour of those who contributed and sacrificed their lives in the struggle for independence and the development of the nation.

He said the occasion also allowed the youth to learn from the experiences of senior citizens and help in the development process.

The Regional Minister paid tribute to the late Dr. K. A. Busia, Prime Minister in the Second Republic, whom he said gave his best in the quest to develop the country and urged the youth to follow his example.

Mr. Baffour-Awuah said a bust of the late Premier would be unveiled at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani on July 11.
