Bawku West
hails Government social programmes
Zebilla (UE), June 3, Ghanadot/GNA - Mr Desmond Bugibilla,
Bawku West District Chief Executive (DCE), has commended the
Government for the introduction of the School Feeding and
the Capitation Grant programmes saying they have improved
education in the area.
He said they have helped increased school enrolment,
minimized lateness, absenteeism and promoted pupil retention
in schools in the District.
Mr Bugibilla said these at the People’s Assembly held at the
weekend in Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper
East Region.
He explained that parents could no longer hide under the
pretext of their inability to pay school fees for their
children and as a result many children were being enrolled
in schools.
He, however, appealed to Government to regularly release
funds and on time for the School Feeding Programmes.
The DCE said in the 2007 academic year, the District placed
14th in the Junior High School Examination in the country,
second in the three Northern Regions and for first in the
Upper East Region.
He explained that for the past year, the District had been
sponsoring teacher trainees in various training colleges in
the country and noted that 70 of the trainees had graduated
and were already teaching.
Mr Bugibilla said at present, the District was sponsoring 76
trainees who would soon graduate and teach in the
communities.
He said 30 needy but brilliant students were being sponsored
in the tertiary and the second cycle institutions as well.
Under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the
District, he noted, had so far registered 34,450 people
constituting an increase of over 60 per cent from 2007.
He stated that the District under its Internally Generated
Revenue, realised GH¢49,361 in 2007 as against a projected
revenue of GH¢56,336.
The DCE indicated that the District had so far benefited a
lot from the road networks and the water and sanitation
programme on Small Town Water Projects.
Participants expressed concern about the attendance of many
teenagers to video centres and funeral grounds at night when
they should be studying or sleeping.
Reacting, the Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s
Affairs, Mr Daniel Dugan impressed upon the District
Assembly to enact by-laws to deal with the situation.
