Candidates may be qualified but not suitable - Commey

Cape Coast, April 11, Ghanadot/GNA - Mr Lord Commey, National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Friday noted that the Party may reject a parliamentary candidate seeking to contest on its ticket on the grounds of suitability.

He explained that a candidate may be qualified and eligible to contest but could be withdrawn on the grounds of suitability and that the determination of suitability was the sole prerogative of the National Executive Committee of the Party.

On the question of what constituted suitability, Mr Commey said the issue of good character was one, but could not elaborate further, saying that “it should be left with the Committee to determine it”.

Mr Commey, who made the remarks at a media briefing preceding the vetting of the Central Regional NPP Parliamentary candidates at Cape Coast, said the ambitions and interests of individual members to seek positions in the Party should not override the overall interest of the party.

He said contesting to be an MP was not an absolute right stressing that all candidates should fit within the confines of the strategic framework of the Party.

He said where one’s individual “ambition to be an MP at all cost overrides that of the general interest of the Party”, then that person was not fit to be part of the system.

On the vetting exercise, he said he was hopeful that the aspirants have acquainted themselves with the set rules and regulations and knew their qualification and eligibility.
He urged journalists to be conversant with the constitutions and rules that governed political parties in the country so as to be well informed and serve as a guide against reporting excesses.

Mr Kwamena Duncan, regional secretary of the Party, said of the 19 constituencies in the region, two sitting MPs Kennedy Owusu Agyapong and Nana Amoako were returned unopposed in the Assin North and Upper-Denkyira East districts respectively to contest for the seats in their constituencies.

He said what they termed the “orphaned” constituencies, that is the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA), Twifo-Atti-Morkwa and Mfantsiman East would be won this year.
