Australian High Commissioner in a
massive beach clean-up exercise
Accra, April 5, Ghanadot/GNA – Mr. William Williams,
Australian High Commissioner to Ghana on Saturday
participated in a beach front clean-up exercise in Ga Mashie
aimed at riding the area of filth.
The beachfront clean-up campaign at Ga Mashie was a
collaborative programme between the Australia High
Commission, Old Accra Conservation Development Association (OACDA
and the Ashiedu-Keteke Sub-Metro and United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Mr Williams said the clean-up campaign launched in Australia
some decades ago has over 35 million members in 100
countries that were tasked to ensure global cleanness and
healthy environment.
He said the Commission was therefore sponsoring the exercise
with about GHC20, 000 in the provision of logistics to
ensure successful implementation of the clean-up strategy in
Ghana.
Mr Williams said the initiative would be sustained and
lauded the commitment of the youth to rid the beach lines of
Ga Mashie of filth.
The clean-up campaign was a follow-up to the execution of
the first phase of the rehabilitation of Ussher Fort and the
provision of other social amenities in the area.
Nii Teiko Tagoe, Director of the Ga Mashie development
Agency who also took part in the exercise called on the
inhabitants to always maintain a clean environment to curb
the disease burden of the area.
He said Ga Mashie would soon receive a major facelift with
the support of donor agencies and called on the citizenry to
be on board.
