Millennium Bonds funds to construct modern regional markets
- Government
Koforidua, March 25, Ghanadot/GNA - The
government would use part of the millennium bond that is
being sold to build modern markets for every regional
capital in the country.
Each of the planned market would have a crèche, day nursery,
a clinic, banks and other facilities that would meet the
desires of current and future generations.
Nana Akwasi Adjei-Boateng, New Juaben Municipal Chief
Executive, disclosed this at the inauguration of the
rehabilitated part of the Koforidua Central market that got
burnt in early February this year.
He said the Municipal Assembly was currently looking for an
appropriate site for the construction of such a market and
urged the market women to co-operate with the government
when the project takes off.
Nana Adjei-Boateng said the rehabilitation cost the Assembly
9,600 Ghana Cedis and urged the traders to protect the
market against such incidents.
He also urged them to find a way of warning their friends
and relations who engaged in activities that could bring
problems at the market.
He advised the traders to pay their market tolls and rates
of their stalls and stores for the Assembly to always have
sufficient resources to support them.
Nana Adjei-Boateng said the Municipal Assembly was still
discussing with the Member of Parliament for the area on how
to raise funds to support the market women who lost their
monies and wares in the fire outbreak and promised that when
the various arrangements were completed they would be
informed.
He advised the traders that those whose business funds were
above 5,000 Ghana Cedis should take an insurance policy to
cover their businesses so that in case of theft or fire
outbreak the insurance companies could help.
Nana Ama Bonsu, Koforidua Market Queen mother thanked the
Municipal Assembly for the early completion of the project
and pleaded with the Assembly to help the market women to
reconstruct their containers so that they could safely keep
their goods after sales.
She advised the market women to save their money at the
Merchant Bank near the central market to avoid theft or
having it burnt when there is a fire outbreak at the market.
Nana Ama Bonsu said to enable the market women save their
daily sales, the bank had decided to close at 1800 hours.
