Revisit objectives of founding fathers – Lecturer
Accra, March. 08, Ghanadot/GNA – Dr. Kumi Ansah-Koi, Senior
Lecturer in Political Science, University of Ghana, has
called on Ghanaians to Revisit and scrutinize the objectives
and desire underlying the founding fathers patriotic
struggle and the establishment of the nation.
He made the call at a public lecture organized by the
Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture in collaboration with
management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra as
part of the activities marking the commemoration of Ghana’s
51st Independence, which fell on Thursday.
Dr Ansah-Koi noted that, Ghana had a long list of heroes and
great personalities whose lives and thought could have a
positive impact on the nation.
“Nkrumah counts among such people,” he stated about the
first President of Ghana. “There is the need to properly
acknowledge their greatness and worth. Beyond that, we must
go beyond partisanship and human foibles to the best of the
legacies of such great personalities,” the Senior Lecturer
said.
He was speaking on the topic; “Kwame Nkrumah: Symbol of
Africa’s Humanity, Development and World Peace; The
Unfinished Agenda”.
Dr Ansah-Koi commended the organizers of the lecture since
it would facilitate serious public reflection and debate on
the life, thought, works and the unfinished agenda of
Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
He expressed the hope that the lecture would provoke serious
thoughts and reflection and debate with regards to Ghana,
Africa, the Black race and humanity of Nkrumah’s thought.
Dr Ansah-Koi noted that, “such though and reflection,
possibly debate would be critically important, especially
now that oil had been found in commercial quantities in
Ghana’s territorial waters, coupled with frequent praises by
foreigners which seems to have gotten into our heads.”
He pointed out that, “There is therefore the need to
interrogate and scrutinize contemporary realities and trends
in the light of founding President Nkrumah’s thought praxis,
life and works.”
He described Nkrumah not only as a statesman and a patriotic
nationalist but also a Pan-Africanist who widened the
horizons of the nationalist struggle to embrace social
justice, equity and issues of global peace and sustainable
development and won worldwide recognition for his greatness.
Dr Ansah-Koi noted once again that one of the unfinished
agenda of Dr Nkrumah was “an independent, free, prosperous
and united Africa,” which he said eluded the continent only
last year in Ghana at the Summit of the African Union.
The Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Park, Mr. K. Manu-Asiamah,
gave the assurance that there would be more publicity about
the programme in the subsequent celebration of the
anniversary to attract more audience.
Mr. K.B. Asante, a retire Public Servant, who chaired the
lecture stressed the need for the promotion of “African
personality” and self-reliance if Africa was to catch-up
with the rest of the world.
