Agona East NPP polling station chairmen want MP returned
unopposed
Agona Swedru, March 8, Ghanadot/GNA - Sixty-nine out of the
Eighty–nine polling station chairmen of the New Patriotic
Party (NPP) in the Agona East and some constituency
executives have endorsed a return of the MP Mr John Kwesi
Agyabeng, unopposed for the 2008 general election.
In a resolution copied to the Ghana News Agency at Agona
Swedru on Friday, they noted that their decision was based
on the fact that Agona East was a strong National Democratic
Congress (NDC) base and that the NPP had to fight hard in
unity to capture the seat in the 2004 election.
They stated that the MP had done enough to retain the seat
and had to be allowed to continue with his good work, adding
that, the NDC was fielding an independent candidate who
obtained over seven thousand (7000) votes in the 2004
election, while the party’s own candidate obtained over
5,000 votes as against 18,000 by the NPP candidate.
“Looking at the statistics it will be unwise and dangerous
to introduce a new candidate within the limited period for
the elections.”
The resolution noted that a parliamentary primary could
bring division and tension among the rank and file of the
party supporters.
“It is a dangerous gamble. Large numbers of our party
supporters are against that gamble,” it stated.
The resolution said the MP had worked hard and deserved
another chance since he was the only candidate who could
battle the NDC in all areas of the constituency.
“We therefore resolve that there is no need for any
parliamentary primaries in the 2008 general elections” they
said.
