Child labour is key to Kente industry in parts of Volta
Region
Ho, Jan. 09, Ghanadot/GNA - Kente weaving
is fast becoming the major attraction in parts of the Volta
Region where children, mostly trafficked from neighbouring
Togo and parts of the region, have become the driving force.
Mr Edwin Gamadeku, Volta Regional Director of the Commission
on Children, sounded the alarm in an interview with the
Ghana News Agency in Ho.
He said kente-weaving was taking over from fishing as a
major employer of child labour in the region to the extent
that master craftsmen were resorting to generators to keep
the children working throughout the night.
Mr Gamadeku said in communities such as Have, Kpetoe and
Taviefe-Deme the children were made to work from dusk to
down by their masters.
He expressed fears that the situation could harm school
enrolment in the region leading to the closure of schools
unless the situation was checked quickly.
Mr Gamadeku said the Sadzikope Junior High School in the
Hohoe District had become the first casualty where the
school was closed down because of low enrolment.
He appealed to non-governmental organizations to collaborate
with the Commission in its drive to sensitize the children
and their masters on the need for the children to go to
school.
