BOG urged to renew collaboration
with NCCE
Sekondi July 11, GNA-
The Bank of Ghana (BOG) has been urged to renew its
collaboration with the National Commission for Civic
Education (NCCE) to enable it to continue with the education
on the re-denomination of the cedi during the transitional
period of the exercise.
Mr Orpheus Mensah, Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Director
of the commission made the appeal on Wednesday in an
interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Sekondi.
He said his office has received numerous appeals from the
public to continue with the education on the exercise, but
the commission's collaboration with BOG ended in June.
Mr Mensah said religious and workers organisations, among
others, have extended invitations to the commission to
educate their members on the re-denomination exercise, but
the commission has not been able to do honour their
invitations because of the lack of financial support.
He said a survey conducted by his office indicates that
people are generally happy with the Ghana cedi and taxi and
trotro drivers are accepting both the old and new
currencies.
Mr Mensah said a section of the public is of the view that
the 10 Gp and the 5 Gp are too small but people's opinion
would change and accept them because they are new
currencies.
He said the banks are restricting the issuing of the GHc10,
Ghc20 and the GHc50 notes and urged them to release more of
it to enable the public to get familiar with them.
