Ban haulage of timber/bauxite by
road-senior citizen
Sekondi, July 4, Ghanadot.GNA - Opanyin Atta Amuah, a farmer
at Wassa Akropong, has called on the government to ban the
haulage of timber, bauxite, quarry stones and other heavy
raw materials by road.
He said hauling those heavy items by road impacted
negatively on the already poor road networks in the region.
Opanyin Amuah said this on Monday at the Senior Citizens Day
organised by the Western Regional Coordinating Council (RCC)
at Sekondi to mark Ghana's 47th Independence Anniversary.
He said the railways should be re-activated to transport all
heavy resources from the hinterland to the cities to
safeguard the roads.
"The Western Region lags behind in road construction and the
few good roads should not be destroyed."
Mr. Anthony Amoah, the Western Regional Minister, told the
veterans that over 30 roads were being constructed
throughout the region as provided for in the 2007 budget.
He said a Chinese firm was constructing the 55-kilometre
Enchi/Asankrangwa road while a new contractor had been found
to begin work on the Dadieso/Africa road.
Mr. Amoah appealed to the senior citizens to pass on their
expertise to their children to make them competent and
skilful.
He said the region had developed a blue print to accelerate
its development programmes and appealed to them to
contribute their quota.
