IMF Deputy Managing Director Takatoshi Kato to Visit Ghana
IMF Press Release No. 07/149

July 2, 2007

Mr. Takatoshi Kato, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will travel to Accra, Ghana on July 2-3. This visit comes at a time of intensified attention and support for the continent from the international community to further the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and also highlights the importance of Africa for the Fund.

Mr. Kato will attend the African Union's Summit on the "Grand Debate on the Union Government" at the invitation of President John Agyekum Kufuor. At the Summit, Mr. Kato looks forward to a rich discussion of how best to accelerate regional integration in Africa and Africa's integration into the global economy, with a view to creating jobs, raising economic growth, and fighting poverty on the continent.

While in Ghana, Mr. Kato will meet with several African Heads of State. During these meetings, he will listen to the reflections of the leaders on the challenges to securing higher growth and poverty reduction, and how the IMF can better help their countries address them.

Mr. Kato will hold meetings with President Kufuor and his senior economic team on the opportunities and challenges facing Ghana. During his visit, he will also exchange views with representatives of the Ghana Investment Council, civil society, and development partners.
