Nigeria's Globacom Gets License
For Mobile Phone Service In Ghana
IBADAN, Nigeria -(Dow Jones)- Globacom, Nigeria's indigenous
telecommunications company, has received a license to
provide mobile phone services in Ghana from the country's
National Communications Authority, a company official said
Monday.
The official said that, after a "keenly" contested open
technical bid, NGA chose Globacom as the preferred bidder
because of the "superiority of its technical presentation,
pedigree and extensive rollout plan,"
Globacom has begun preliminary work in Ghana, such as
looking for sites for base stations preparatory to the
launch of its services in the country, the official added.
The company operates in Nigeria and has about 18 million
mobile phone subscribers. It also has a license to run
fixed-line services in Nigeria.
Last week, the company rolled out its mobile services in
neighboring Benin Republic, where it has built capacity for
5 million subscribers.
