Police Task Force engage robbers in shoot out at Sakumono

Tema, June 10, Ghanadot/GNA- Personnel of the Sakumono Police District Task Force early Tuesday morning engaged an unspecified number of armed men in a gun battle at Community 20, Sakumono.

Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Police Public Affairs Officer told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the armed robbers on board a suspected stolen green Fiat Saloon car with registration number GE 2669 Y were spotted by the Task Force in the vicinity at about 0300 hours.

Narrating the circumstances leading to the shoot out, she said the robbers snatched the car from a lady at Sakumono, who informed the police through its emergency line.

The Patrol Team, who was in turn informed about the snatching incident, spotted the car, which tallied with the description given by the victim and they signalled the robbers to stop but they accelerated leading to the fire exchange.

She said even though no arrest has been made, blood stains at the scene indicated that a member of the robbery syndicate had been wounded, adding that, the Tema Regional Police Command has taken custody of the car, which was abandoned by the robbers during the incident pending further investigation.

Meanwhile the Tema Regional Police Command would on Friday conduct an identification parade at the Sakumono District Police headquarters to enable robbery victims in and around the vicinity to identify the perpetrators.

This was contained in a press release dated June 10 and signed by Inspector Turkson.
The release requested victims of robbery incidents in Sakumono Township “to come and identify the arrested suspects, who would be paraded at the station at 1000 hours”.

The statement also said the Tema Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) John Kudalor has appealed to the public to help the police with information and tip-offs.

According to the statement, the suspected robbers to be identified were apprehended as a result of a tip-off and urged the public to emulate the positive attitude of their colleagues.

The press release entreated residents in and around Sakumono to inform the police of any robbery on numbers 202936, 202937, 022-401193, 021-811600.

In another development, the Sakumono Police District Task Force on June 05 arrested two suspected robbers at about 2300 hours riding an unregistered Yamaha motor bike.
A face mask, two sharp machetes and a small knife were found in a bag Abdalah Ibrahim alias Dogo, 31, and Tajudeen Mohammed, 30, were carrying at the time of the arrest.

The statement observed that a locally manufactured pistol, one machete, one sharp double edge knife, a catapult and a hammer were also retrieved from them when the search was extended to their residence at Maamobi West, a suburb of Accra.

Inspector Turkson stated that in a related case, a resident of Community 20 was on June 03 at about 2300 hours attacked by three armed robbers wielding locally manufactured pistols and a cutlass.

The release said the robbers succeeded in taking the victim’s ladies bag containing a Nokia and Belling mobile phones valued at GH˘110, cash of GH˘57, Barclays Bank ID card, cheque books and her car ignition key.
