Educationist suggests measures to
check examination mal-practice
Adankrono (E/R), March 20, GNA- An Educationist, Mr Samuel
Antwi, has suggested that The West African Examination's
Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) should
recruit Basic School Teachers to supervise and invigilate
examination as a measure to check mass cheating. at the West
African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE),.Speaking
to the Press at Adankrono, near Kade, Mr Antwi, a Basic
School Teacher, expressed surprise that the WASSCE and
previously the Senior Secondary School Certificate
Examination (SSSCE) were supervised and invigilated by
Headmasters and their staff.
He questioned why the Basic Education Certificate
Examination(BECE) was supervised and invigilated by primary
school teachers and not Junior Secondary School(JSS)
teachers who taught the candidates.
He said in the case of the WASSCE and the SSSCE, the
teachers who taught the candidates were allowed to supervise
and invigilated them.
Mr Antwi concluded that the situation as it is now would
definitely lead to some unscrupulous and dishonest
headmasters and their staff helping their students to obtain
good results, hence the organized cheating.
The educationist referred to the concern raised by the
Minister of Education, Science and Sports, Paapa owusu
Ankomah about mass cheating during the maiden edition of the
WASSCE in Ghana at the WAEC excellence award.
According to the Minister, the irregularities involved
collision cases, which confirmed that supervision and
invigilation at the examination centres were poor.
Mr Antwi observed that since the introduction of the SSSCE
performance table, some five years ago, some less endowed
schools had been showing "wonderful" results to the
amazement of the general public.
He observed that, funny things were happening on the
positions on the table and asked how could a school, which
placed 250 in one year suddenly rise to the top 10 the
following year.
Mr Antwi described that as incredible and wondered why the
research department of WAEC had not done anything about
that.
He therefore asked the authorities to act fast in view of
the fact that the next WASSCE was just around the corner.
