Government urged to support teachers'
educational programmes
Koforidua, March 19, GNA - Teachers in the Eastern Region
has called on the Government to support teachers who wanted
to upgrade themselves through the Distance Education
Programme.
They observed that, considering the problem of inadequate
teachers in the classrooms, the best alternative to improve
upon their educational status while at the same offering
their services to the children of the country was through
the Programme.
The call was made when the National Officers of the Ghana
National Association of Teachers (GNAT) met with members of
the Association in the Region at Koforidua, as part of a
tour of the Region.
Among the several complaints and issues raised at the
meeting was the issue of delayed pay slip.
According to the teachers they received their pay slips,
long after they have collected their salaries and called on
the Leadership to intervene for the anomaly to be rectified.
They also charged the National Officers to ensure that
concerns raised on teachers' well being were dealt with
appropriately by the Government.
The national President of GNAT, Mr Joseph Kwaku Adjei said
the Association would continue to work to improve their
working conditions.
He mentioned the support to teachers on the Distance
Education Programme and the upgrading of certificate "A" by
Teacher Training Colleges to diploma status as some of the
apprehensions that the Government had promised to solve.
The National President said they have noted some distortions
in the salaries of teachers since January 2007 and adding
that members in second cycle institutions, whose salaries
were seized last year, that it would be paid at the end of
the March 2007.
Mr Adjei called on them to continue supporting the
Leadership to justify the trust and responsibility they had
reposed in them.
The Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr Nathaniel Apronti said
the forum was the climax of their tour to deprived districts
to know their problems and how best the Association could
support teachers there.
He urged them to be committed to the Association to
encourage the Leadership to work for their well being.
