NGO donates computers to Ghanaian Schools

Accra, March 17, GNA–Government’s effort to revamp the educational sector received a boost with the provision of over four hundred computers and accessories to some schools across the country to facilitate teaching and learning.

The computers, donated by a United Kingdom based Non-Governmental Organisation, Collect and Recycle Ecologically, (CARE) was to enhance education in the country, Mr Jibreal K. Hagan, a Director of CARE told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday.

He noted that the idea to support developing countries with computers was conceived by his daughter, Phoebe, who had it difficult in communicating via the internet with her cousins in Ghana.

He said the two worked earnestly for the past four years to solicit computers from schools, companies and individuals who gave off their redundant ICT tools freely in the UK to support the vision.

Mr. Hagan said so far he has had over thousand computers and accessories dump in his garage to be distributed to schools in Ghana.

He said information on the first tranche of over hundred were wiped off using the Ministry of Defence standard IBM security Data Disposal to avoid internet fraud and siphoning of other donors personal information.

Mr Hagan noted that due to global warming and green house effect which often came about as a result of the emission of toxic gas into the air, CARE computers would soon set up, learn, repair and recycle through sound environmental roots centres in schools to control this problem.

“I have set up a service and distribution centre in Accra, with qualified personal to man the distribution and repair of computers”.

He assured schools who have not yet received theirs to be patients and cautioned heads of the various schools to use the computers for the intended purpose.

Mr. Hagan lauded the support by the Ministry of Education and the Custom Excise and Preventive Service for helping to select the needy schools and tax exemption respectively.

Phoebe Hagan, founder of CARE, called on Ghanaian schools to sign up with the NGO to help them benefit from the initiative.
