Use 50th Anniversary to move the
country forward-Dr Ashitey.
Accra, March 2, GNA - Dr (Mrs) Gladys Norley Ashitey, Deputy
Minister for Health, on Friday appealed to political leaders
to use the 50th Anniversary to work together in order to
move the nation forward.
"As political leaders, whatever we say or do, exert a lot of
influence on the masses and that is why we must always seek
to exert the right kind of influence for the people to
emulate," she said.
Speaking during a parade of school children at Teshie in
Accra to mark the pre-golden jubilee independence
Anniversary in Accra, Dr. Ashitey said Ghanaians should not
allow political differences to divide them.
"Fifty (50) years of independence and we still find
ourselves far behind countries that gained independence
almost in the same year as we did or some years after ours."
Dr. Ashitey, who is also MP for the area, urged Ghanaians to
embrace the spirit of nationalism and patriotism by
participating in the 50th Anniversary celebration and called
on parents in the area to take advantage of the capitation
grant to send their children to school.
Madam Adisa Neidow, Circuit 32 Supervisor, said the aim of
the parade was to enable school children in the area to
compete and also promote unity in the area.
She said due to the number of schools in the circuit, a lot
of students did not get the opportunity to take part in the
national parade at the independence square.
The Deputy Minister therefore proposed the idea of a
pre-independence anniversary parade each year.
The parade brought together 19 schools from the Teshie
cluster of schools and other civil societies. Teshie St
John's Preparatory and King David Preparatory schools
emerged winners in the Junior Secondary and Primary
categories respectively.
Each school had 100,000 cedis as appearance fee with the
winners receiving 500,000 cedis each.
