Ghanaians asked to use 50th
anniversary celebrations to preserve the environment
Accra, Feb. 19, GNA- An environmental activist, Mr Michael
Yao Tomfeah, on Monday called on Ghanaians to use the 50th
anniversary celebration of the country’s independence to
champion the fight against the wanton destruction of the
environment.
“At 50 Ghanaians must learn to correct their past mistakes.
Burning of bushes for hunting or for farming should be a
fairy tale for posterity. Let us get actively involve in
avoiding the setting of all types of bushfires. Bushfires
are not only dangerous to the environment and wildlife, but
also threatens human lives and property,” he said.
Mr Tomfeah, who is the Head of the German-based
environmental non-governmental organisation- Afrika
Wiederaufforstungsverein e.v. who was speaking to the Ghana
News Agency in an interview in Accra, said the country was
losing a number of plants with medicinal values through
indiscriminate burning of the forest.
He asked all stakeholders in the protection of the
environment such as chiefs, Environmental Protection Agency,
Ghana National Fire Service, the Police and NGO’s to help
educate people especially against bush burning and implement
laws that makes the practice an offence.
Mr Tomfeah suggested the need for every village to get fire
brigades, who should carry out sustainable education on the
environment and create fire defence belts in every
community.
