GNFS calls for
public cooperation in fire prevention
Tarkwa (W/R), Jan. 24, Ghanadot/GNA – Emmanuel Dorglo,
officer in charge of Tarkwa office of the Ghana National
Fire Service (GNFS), has called for public cooperation in
the prevention of fire outbreaks, especially during the
harmattan season.
In an interview with GNA, he urged farmers to prepare fire
belts before setting fire to cleared bushes when preparing
land for cultivation and children should not be allowed to
mishandle fire.
Mr. Dorglo appealed to government to provide the GNFS with
accommodation and sufficient vehicles and equipment to
enable it work effectively.
He asked individuals and families to acquire fire
extinguishers to help reduce fire outbreaks and announced
the change of the fire service emergency numbers from 999 to
192.
Mr. Dorglo explained that though the 999 numbers were still
relevant for the police, hospital and fire service, 192 was
exclusive for the GNFS.
Asked why the GNFS was at times late in responding to calls
to fight fire outbreaks, he said some recalcitrant persons
called the emergency numbers to make fun of the Service and
that there was the need to authenticate calls before
responding to them.
